How to Naturally Clean and Restore a Dirty Iron

If there is one household appliance we would rather abandon and never have to pick up again this is the iron! When we see that chair of laundry growing more and more every day, it would only take a magic wand to make it go away, wouldn’t it? Unfortunately, it is a step that one must inevitably take at home, even if one adopts methods to avoid ironing everything. One thing that should not be underestimated, moreover, is the cleaning of the iron, which is very important so that lime scale does not build up and dirt is not transferred to the clothes. Let’s take a look together at all the methods to make the iron like new again!

Let’s start with the boiler, the element that definitely accumulates more limescale than the others. You have to be very careful to clean it effectively without damaging it, which is why we recommend only natural and gentle ingredients. Let’s take a look at the most effective ones to make the boiler of the iron new again!

  • Vinegar

The first can only be vinegar, a natural product that possesses a great anti-scale property excellent in such cases. Depending on the size of the boiler, fill it with equal parts demineralized water and vinegar, after which you turn on the iron to heat it up and let the steam out. With this step, all the lime scale will be removed naturally. Once all the mixture has evaporated, turn it off and check for a vinegar smell. If you smell a bit, repeat the step using only demineralized water and that’s it!

  • Citric acid

Another very effective ingredient that can do the trick for the boiler is citric acid! Similar to vinegar, this product also possesses an anti-scale action that is useful for so many chores around the house. All you will need to do is dissolve 1/3 lb of citric acid in 1 quart of water and pour it all inside the boiler until it is full. Then turn it on to evaporate the mixture, which will automatically remove all the lime scale.

Once we have taken care of the boiler, let’s move on to the iron plate! If the water in the boiler is full of lime scale, it will go without saying that the soleplate will also become encrusted and there is a risk of transferring the dirt to the cloths as well. That is why below I will report all the natural remedies with which you can make the soleplate shiny and like new again!

  • Baking soda

Baking soda is always a great solution when it comes to sending away encrusted dirt on metal elements. So, it will be perfect for your straightener! You will need to prepare a mixture by mixing 1 tablespoon of baking soda and water until it is the consistency of a gel. After that, put the resulting paste on a toothbrush and gently scrub all over the plate to remove stubborn scale. Rinse with a microfiber cloth and there you go!

  • Lemon

Lemon is also a valuable aid when it comes to sending away limescale! In fact, the world’s most famous and versatile citrus fruit has acidic properties that are perfect in our case. You’ll need to heat the plate a bit (it will only need to be hot, not boiling) and run a lemon cut in half over it with some baking soda sprinkled on top. Once you’ve gone over the lemon, proceed by scrubbing with a sponge and afterwards rinse, the plate will be as good as new!

  • Organic soap

Now it is time for organic soap, another natural and valuable home remedy! Its degreasing property and scent make it unique, so why not use it to make your iron plate new again? You will need to moisten the soleplate with warm water and run the Marseille soap over it, rubbing it like a sponge. Then scrub with a sponge to remove the rest of the stains and rinse with plenty of even in order to send all the soap residue away.

  • Candle trick

The candle trick is a particularly popular and widely used method especially in cases of severe limescale buildup, let’s see how to use it right away! First, you need to heat the plate without making it too hot, then unplug it. Immediately after that, you will need to wipe the candle with one hand, and with the other hand you will need to have a damp microfiber cloth ready to remove all the residue. The wax will dissolve all the dirt and the plate will be clean again immediately. However, if it should still be dull, you can pass half a lemon and it will be shiny!

Finally, let’s see how to rid the plate holes of accumulated dirt and lime scale! These especially need to be cleaned all the time, otherwise the steam will not be able to get out effectively. All you will need to do is dip a Q-tip in vinegar and swipe it inside the holes, and you will see the scale gradually go away. Once all the holes have been cleaned, wipe them dry with a cloth and they will be free of dirt again!

We recommend that you always consult the appliance’s washing and maintenance instructions before proceeding with the methods described.
