Mistakes that Cause Bad Smelling Clothes

You have just washed your laundry in the washing machine but nevertheless you still smell bad. How many times has this happened to you? I imagine often. There are many reasons why this happens and all we can do is to identify or prevent them so that we can avoid having to wash our laundry again. Therefore, today we will see together why laundry smells even after washing in the washing machine and how to prevent it from happening!

Too much detergent

We are often led to think that more detergent will make our laundry smell better, ignoring the fact that this is not the case at all! If you use too much, in fact, it tends to soak into the fibers of your clothes and not be rinsed properly, resulting in laundry that is not at all fragrant.

For this reason, we advise you not to overdo the quantities and to use natural and ecological products, such as organic soap, which, in addition to being very fragrant, boasts very gentle cleaning properties, and baking soda, which is known for its ability to neutralize odors. Therefore, add 2 tablespoons of liquid organic soap and 1 tablespoon of baking soda to the detergent tray and then start the washing cycle. Goodbye bad odors!

Dirty washing machine

Although the washing machine is the appliance that can wash and scent your clothes, it itself tends to get dirty and, therefore, needs a lot of care. Often, in fact, bad odors on laundry are due precisely to a dirty washing machine, full of lime scale, dirt, mold and detergent residue. In particular, it is the dirty drum that tends to transfer the smell to our laundry. So, what to do? Easy, you need to clean it in all its components to prevent this problem! Dissolve, then, 1 tablespoon of organic Soap in 0.5 quart of water and add, then, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. At this point, mix it all together and decant it into a spray container. Finally, spray this mixture in the basket, detergent tray and on the gasket and you are done.

For the filter, on the other hand, we recommend that you unscrew it, let the water run through it and then soak it in a basin containing water and a little of the solution seen above. For optimal and complete cleaning of the washing machine, we also recommend that you proceed with an empty wash with citric acid once a month, so as to reach even the most hidden dirt!

Mistakes in washing

Obviously, among the reasons why your laundry may not smell as good as you would like it to be figures a wrong wash. In fact, we often tend to favor short washes to optimize time and to wash as many garments as possible, but in reality too short a wash does not thoroughly clean our clothes, so they tend to smell.

It is equally wrong to proceed with washes with temperatures below 100 °F, as low temperatures are unable to kill the bacteria that cause odor on laundry and in the washing machine. Try, therefore, to always choose temperatures ranging from at least 100 to 140 °F.

Wrong drying

Washing is finished and now it is time to let your clothes dry. Beware, however, that even at this stage you may make mistakes that could cause unpleasant odors on your laundry.

First of all, we recommend that you immediately hang out your laundry as soon as you have finished the wash cycle and then do not leave it in the drum for hours in order to prevent mold and stagnant water from settling on the clothes, causing them to smell. For optimal drying, it would be good to lay the clothes in the sun and not pile them on top of each other so as not to hinder air circulation.

If you do not have the option of hanging them out in the sun, you can also let them dry at home provided, however, that you hang them in an airy room of the house where the sun’s rays also reach. Finally, remember to let them dry thoroughly and do not deposit them in the closet when they still have damp parts.

Towel trick

Finally, let’s look together at the scented towel trick, which will help you make your clothes super fragrant in the washing machine! All you need to do is moisten a clean towel with a little lukewarm water and then rub a lump of organic soap on both sides. Finally, put the towel in the washing machine with your other clothes and you will notice that your laundry will smell better than ever!
